Designing with Everyone in Mind

The Grade 4 classes  took their learning beyond the classroom with a community walk to Rouge Crest Park! As part of our ICT learning, students are exploring how thoughtful design can help make spaces more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for everyone.

Before our visit, students were introduced to the idea of does everyone feel like they belong? The idea that spaces and products should be designed so that people with a wide range of abilities can use and enjoy them and feel welcomes. We discussed different types of barriers people may experience and considered an important question: Does everyone have the same opportunity to play?

At the playground, students became design investigators. They observed pathways, playground equipment, entrances, seating, surfaces, and other features while looking for examples of inclusive design. They also identified potential barriers that could make it difficult for some children to participate fully.

Back in class, students reflected on what they discovered and considered how the playground could be improved so that children of all abilities can participate, play, and feel included.

This experience helped our Grade 4s see that good design is about understanding people, recognizing barriers, showing empathy, and designing with everyone in mind.
